Latest 4-VA mini grants boost scholarship across campus
A two-day research meeting this summer to explore uses for the new Madison Accelerator Laboratory in the newly renovated Madison Hall has received a $12,500 grant from 4-VA at JMU.
The grant was the largest of 11 awards announced during a ceremony Thursday, April 6 at Lakeview Hall.
“It’s amazing to see how this program has grown and this group is one of the most diverse. Truly impressive,” JMU President Jonathan Alger said before handing out the awards.
Nick Swayne, executive director of 4-VA at JMU, noted that this was the 11th cycle for the awards, bringing the grand total to $800,000 in five years. The money has provided a boost to more than 115 projects and 90 unique recipients across all colleges multiple times, he said. Swayne also said the projects have resulted in a $5 return for every dollar spent.
Of the 11 awards announced Thursday, 10 were for collaborative projects involving faculty at other 4-VA institutions; the other, for $7,000, will help with a course redesign in health sciences. Award winners represented five colleges and eight departments; six of the 11 awardees received funding for the first time.
